My first stop was on my way through Louisiana as I sought out and found the grave of one of my relatives on my mother's side of the family, Brigadier General St. John Richardson Liddell.  He was a staff officer to General Bragg as well as a personal friend by way of his family to Jefferson Davis.  He served as a courier between Davis and Bragg on more than one occasion.  He later became commander of his own brigade and soon commanded a Division at the battle of Chickamauga.  His last command was as the field commander at Ft. Blakely when it was stormed the evening of April 9th, 1865, the same day Lee surrendered at Appomattox.  This was the last major engagement of the Civil War.  He survived the war to only be gunned down in 1870 on a river boat near his plantation by a neighbor in a bitter family feud that started before the Civil War.
