FIRST BATTLEFIELD

These pictures were made at 7:00 am on a cloudy day.  My apologies for the lighting

problems in some of them.

                                   Vicksburg Battlefield

Though I didn't want to do a "Monument Presentation", Vicksburg lends itself to little but that. In regards to that, the monuments are spectacular here and all states and units that fought here are well represented.  The field is well documented and the battle lines are clearly marked. However, over the years trees have grown up and you can't even see the other lines, separated by only a few hundred feet in places.  Occasionally there is an opening giving a glimpse of what the battlefield probably looked like back then.

The tour itself is a one way circular route that follows the Union lines and then comes back across by way of the Confederate lines.

Cannon located adjacent to Mississippi River. (This one is called "The Widow Blakely")

The battlefield is just a lush green and a joy to drive through and visit.  Unfortunately, it is not good for observing the battle lines.

The following pictures are of different monuments scattered throughout the park that I found of interest.

This John Adams is no relation as far as I know:

One of a few spots you could actually see across the way.

Surrender site

MG John Logan

Story of the mine explosion:

View of the mine explosion area and marker regarding and earlier Union assault (Gen. Nelms' type of attack!)

Looking back the other way:

OHIO Monument followed by close up of the two sculptures on either side.

Can anyone identify the type carbine this Cavalryman is using?

General U. S. Grant's HQ.  Bad lighting unfortunately.

View of Mississippi River

Thayer's Approach from Union perspective:

Thayer's Approach from Rebel perspective

Uh-oh.  Horses foot is up in the air.  Not a good sign.

Pemberton:

All you Rebs take your hats off. You are in the presence of the Honorable Jefferson Davis.

The Lone Star State memorial:

Major General McClernand:

Artillery around the park.

This could get the Rebel's attention!

In front of Visitors Center

Artillery fire demonstration crew with ceremonial cannon.

I thought this was the most unique monument in the park:

Cairo exhibit was absolutely fascinating.  Worth the cost of entry by itself.

Final resting place for many a Yank.  Thousands unknown:  Vicksburg National Cemetery

Departed and headed east on Interstate 59.
